If you can't schedule the time for a Multi-Day, then a day trip is your next best bet. Trip #1 is by far the most popular for Trout and Steelhead. Trip #4 is very seasonal for Steelhead only as the runs work their way upriver.
Here's a Trout/Steelhead month by month fishing calendar
May
Higher water with hungry fish. If it's warm enough and the bugs are out, we're fishing dries on top. The nymphing is really good in May and emerger patterns produce some memorable fights.
Trip #1,#2,#3
June
The Salmonflies and Golden Stones provide alot of action and major fun to be had throught the month of June. Although the nymphing continues to be outstanding, the big bugs are out and we spend the majority of our time casting big dry flies on top.
Trip #1,#2,#3
July
We do alot of wet wading during the hot, dry summer of the high desert. The top water action
in July and August is a blast. The Caddis and Mayflies are everywhere. Pupa, emergers and dries are all in order to hopefully hook that hog sipping a back eddie. The top water dry fly action is mostly 5pm - dark on the Deschutes River, after we see some shade on the water. The nymphing during the day is also outstanding. There even could be an occasional early summer steelhead bending your rod too!
Trip #1,#2,#3
The steelhead are beginning their journey from the Pacific Ocean then on up the mighty Columbia River and then up the Deschutes. Each year the timing of the runs depend on many factors - ocean conditions, the water temperature in the Columbia River and most importantly the migration the smolts had 3-4 years ago on their way out to the Pacific. Generally we see good numbers of fish beginning their run in July.
Trip #4 and #5.
August
Trout fishing is still going strong. Even when the bugs on top slow down the nymphing for trout stays strong through October. Our attention is shifting to Steelhead though as our ocean going friends are making the turn from the Columbia River into the Deschutes. Here we shift to Trip # 4 and #5 to hook up with the big boys.
September - November
Starting in September and running upriver through the end of November you are in the prime season for renown Deschutes Steelhead. The trout season has slowed but it's not over by any means. Last season I guided three fisherman in to a "triple play" in October while targeting trout with 5 weights. We hooked and landed 2 nice trout and a steelhead all at the same time. Alot of work for me as I was the only one with a net! Usually by this time of year we're working hard with the 7 & 8 weights in hopes of connecting with that 32" native steelie! Late September, all of October and through Thanksgiving the fish are "in". Trip #1,#2,#3
Soon, thanks to the Warm Springs Tribe and PGE steelhead will be making their way up into Lake Billy Chinook and it's tributaries and then most importantly - BACK!!! For more information on this journey visit -
